TESTING MY DNA
As you may know (or not know), I am come from Haiti, I was born in Haiti and the same goes for my parents and my grandparents. But ever since I discovered some DNA testing video on youtube a while while back, I’ve been getting curious about testing my DNA. One thing leading to another this is exactly what I did with MyHeritage, a DNA testing company, when they contacted me. And I want to thank them for sponsoring today’s article.
Before we dive in, I want to let you know that you will find a little gift at the end of this article, and before that; my results and a link to my video reaction on instagram. So please read on.
WHAT IS MYHERITAGE?
MyHeritage is an online destination which allows you to discover your ethnicity through DNA testing and study your family’s ancestry. It was founded in 2003 in Israel by Gilad Japhet who is an entrepreneur and a family historian.
More than a destination, MyHeritage is also a platform where you can create your family tree for free and/or find lost relatives you never knew about thanks to the test, which matches your DNA with other people in their database.
WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE KIT? HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
The DNA testing kit costs currently 83.- CHF or 69.- EUR instead of 89.- and inside of it you will find:
- 1 identification/registration paper
- 2 buccal swabs
- 2 small containers (filled with a liquid solution)
- 1 return envelope
HOW IT WORKS? HOW TO DO THE TEST?
Here’s what you will have to do once you have received your personal kit:
- Once the box opened, you need to register your kit on the website.
- Take one buccal swab, put it in your mouth, swab it against your left cheek for about 1 minute.
- Take one small container, insert the used buccal swab in it and put pressure to break it so that the small coton part with your DNA stays inside.
- Repeat this with the second buccal swab, with your right cheek.
HOW MUCH TIME DOES IT TAKES TO GET THE RESULTS?
From there, it will take approximately 3 to 4 weeks for you to get your results.
It took mine 4 weeks.
HOW WILL YOU KNOW WHEN YOUR RESULTS ARE READY?
Once the experts have your results, they automatically put them on your MyHeritage account. At which point you receive an email notification with a link telling you that your results are ready.
By clicking on this link, you will be taken directly to a little demo, giving you your origins based on your DNA.
So before clicking on that link, be ready, get yourself some tea and sit down tightly!
WHY DID I WANTED TO DO THIS TEST?
Based on history, we all know that the island of Haiti was once a colony with slaves imported from the African continent. But before that, it was the earth of the Tainos, the Arawaks people and has seen colonists from many different countries; the principal ones being Spain and France.
Younger, I remember that my grandmother once told me that we had had a “red skin” – meaning a native indian (Tainos) – in the family, but without more detail. Hence, I was curious about how much of the arawak tribes I had in me, knowing which country of Africa my ancestors were from and if I had inherited any the European blood.
WHERE WERE MY ANCESTORS FROM? MY RESULTS
As I clicked on the email link, behind which I was going to discover my long lost blood origins, I was all smiley and felt all excited about this new type of adventure.
Here I am, sitting on a chair, my laptop on my knees and written on the screen “Stéphanie you are…”
- 49.3% Nigerian
- 25% Kenyan
- 17.2% Sierra-Leonese
- 7.5% West Africa
- 0.8% Central Africa
MY REACTION TO THE DNA TEST RESULT?
I was smiling with interest all along and my reaction at the end was simply “Hun..Waow! Ok!”
So I am basically, a 100% African blood taking it’s source probably straight from the 16th century.
These results actually surprised because I was sure that I would find Europe, native american in the mix. I also thought that it would say that I was 30% Cameroonian, because I have had so many times people telling me that I looked Cameroonian or asking me if I was from cameroon.
But I understand now, after watching a few more DNA explanations, that even though I do not have a trace of these origins in my blood doesn’t mean that they weren’t in the family as when we are conceived, we take 50% DNA from our father and 50% DNA from our mother. Which means that this 50% can have a lot of variation, hence we can pick up many different genome codes from our parents.
Watch my reaction in this little video right here!
WHAT WILL I DO WITH THESE RESULTS? WHAT CHANGES?
These results won’t change the way I have been living. I will still answer no to the question “Are you African?” because I was born Haitian, grew up Haitian and identify as such. The only thing that might have changed, is that I can now visit the continent of Africa based on my ancestors origins, which could be very exciting.
